The second place winners for First and Second Boards were Daniel Tovanche of Benjamin Franklin and Blaine Griffin of Sunbeam.
The excitement level was high as Cleveland Metropolitan School students, in grades sixth through twelve, tried to outmaneuver one another during the 28th Annual Chess Championship, held at Max S. Hayes High School.
The matches were hosted on three consecutive Tuesdays, beginning November 13 and ending with the Individual Championship on Monday, December 3, 2012.
The returning K-8 champs, William Cullen Bryant, staged another history making season by achieving a perfect score of twenty-four, for the second year in a row, to win the first place Team Championship Trophy. Eighth graders, Nick Charon and Mike Mascella from WCB were a tag team, as Nick won the First Board individual championship trophy and Mike won the championship trophy for the Second Board.

The biggest upset of the tournament season occurred on the high school level. East Tech, who trailed in fourth place for the first four matches, battled to come from behind to win the Team Championship Trophy. With a score of seventeen, they beat out John Hay by half a point.
The two most competitive players, Maalik Graves of East Tech and Chris Covan of SuccessTech had to share the championship title for First Board as they tied with three and a half wins. The Second Board winners were Sang Lam, first place champion for John Hay and Kyauta Taylor, second place champion for East Tech.
