Tri-C host international conference on conflict resolution

TRI_CActively Caring for People: Preventing Bullying by Improving Individuals, Classrooms, Schools and Communities


CLEVELAND – The Global Issues Resource Center and Library at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) will host the 5th International Summit on Conflict Resolution Education March 14-19 at the Western Campus, 11000 Pleasant Valley Rd., Parma.

Speakers at the “Developing Global Citizens in Schools, Higher Education and the Community” conference include governmental officials from Armenia, Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Belize, Canada, Egypt, Mexico, Nepal and Trinidad and Tobago.

Attendees will include K-12 educators, college and university officials, students, public health officials, prevention specialists, probation and juvenile detention officers and state, local, national and international policy makers.

Highlights of the conference:

Friday, March 16

Empowering Youth as Democratic Citizens in the Community and the Classroom

Presenters: Romina Kasman (Argentina), education consultant at the Organization of American States; Dr. Marva Ribeiro, former program director of the International Cooperation Initiatives unit within the Ministry of Education in Trinidad and Tobago; and Dr. Paula Mark, former teacher education consultant for the Ministries of Education in Grenada, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.

Conflict Resolution through the Lens of International Journalism and Education: The Pulitzer Mode

Presenters:  Mark Schulte, national education coordinator at the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and Nathalie Applewhite, managing director of the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.

Saturday, March 17

Empowering Students to be Active Global Citizens

Presenters:  Dr. Bernie Ronan, vice chancellor for public affairs of the Maricopa Community Colleges.

The Two Faces of Social Media in Conflict

Presenters: Nada Alwadi, Bahraini journalist and co-founder of Bahrain Press Association, and Ahmed Salah, former executive director of The House of New Future Center for Legal and Human Rights Studies in Egypt and the co-founder of Kifaya (the Egyptian Movement for Change) Movement.

While the majority of conference events will take place at Tri-C, pre-conference trainings are March 14-15 at the Crowne Plaza Airport, 7230 Engle Rd., Middleburg Heights.
