Beyond exposure to journalism and the media in the United States and across the world, this program also gives the scholars first-hand experience with the diversity of American life and culture.

Ohio University’s Institute for International Journalism (IIJ) in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Scripps College of Communication, is hosting the second Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) on Journalism and Media program in 2011.

The IIJ welcomed a diverse and talented group of SUSI journalism and media professors/scholars from 17 countries including Poland, Sudan, Nepal, Colombia, Yemen, Estonia, Nigeria, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Turkey, Indonesia, Ukraine, Pakistan, Egypt, Kenya, and Czech Republic. 

SUSI on Journalism and Media is one of several competitively selected summer institutes from a range of academic disciplines, which bring international scholars and experts from universities and academic institutions around the world to the United States.

The SUSI summer institute is funded by an annual renewable grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Study of the U.S. Branch in the Office of Academic Exchange Programs.

Assistant Academic Director, Mary T. Rogus said, “We are thrilled to meet this year’s SUSI scholars who bring such impressive media and journalism experiences, as well as scholarly research agendas to the program. We’ll all be enriched by the sharing of so many different perspectives on communication and global media. Imagine discussing the impact of media with professors from Egypt, Yemen, Pakistan and Sudan which are in the headlines daily.”

The program, which runs from July 4 through Aug. 16, 2011 covers different facets of U.S. and international journalism and media institutions, focusing on the following themes: U.S. media, ethics and society; legal frameworks for media freedoms; roles and responsibilities of journalism and democracy; media and mass communication research, and changing media business models in an era of technological change.

The SUSI scholars will participate in journalism and mass communication academic sessions featuring scholars and journalism practitioners from across the country.  The scholars will experience the diversity of American culture through visits to an Amish community, coal mining towns, local and regional festivals, and Native American and early American historical sites.

Scholars will visit local and national media outlets in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Columbus, including public media and minority media outlets, such as Cleveland’s Call and Post. Scholars also will visit CNN in Atlanta and PBS in Washington, D.C. 

The first SUSI program, hosted at Ohio University in 2010, featured a group of scholars from these 17 countries: Austria, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Finland, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Macedonia, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Rwanda, Thailand, Vietnam, West Bank and Zambia.
