Spike Lee to headline OSU’s Black World Month celebration

Spike-Lee_webCOLUMBUS OHIO -- Lee has been in the news lately with his latest film, the self-financed; low-budget “Red Hook Summer,” which recently played the world-famous Sundance Film Festival. The controversial drama is about an Atlanta boy who is sent to spend the summer with his preacher grandfather in Brooklyn, N.Y.Like all of Lee’s work, the movie explores themes of race, class and other provocative subjects.

Harlem Globetrotters to kick off world tour in Ohio

HARLEM-GLOBETROTTERS_webThe Harlem Globetrotters have a long and celebrated history. Eighty-five years ago in Chicago, a 24-year-old businessman named Abe Saperstein formed a small basketball team called the Savoy Big Five. He was just trying to promote the now-legendary Savoy Ballroom, but in just a few years the team had played more than 1,000 games around the country and became the Harlem Globetrotters.

King Arts Complex to host Kwanzaa Festival Dec. 26-31

kwanzaa_webKwanzaa is a week-long celebration honoring African-American heritage and culture, observed from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1 each year. It features activities such as lighting a candle holder with seven candles and culminates in a feast and gift giving. It was created by African studies professor and activist Dr. Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated in 1966.
