Monae is one of the most unique talents to arrive on the music scene in the past five years. Born Janelle Monae Robinson in Kansas City, Kan., the 25-year-old moved to New York as a teen to study theater at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Earlier this year super comedian Kevin Hart took his “Laugh at My Pain” tour all across the country and over seas along with his roadies for one hell of a comedic ride. Once again, he and his partners are at it again as they release the never-before-seen backstage antics of the “Laugh at My Pain” tour to the world via the big screen. “Laugh at My Pain” will be released in theaters nationwide Friday, Sept. 9. It will show in Cleveland at the Ridge Park Square AMC Theater.
Unity Festival, fashion show among Columbus area Labor Day events
The African Cup and Unity Festival will feature African music, dancing and a soccer tournament over Labor Day Weekend in the Columbus area. Rip the Runway Ohio will be held on Saturday, Sept. 3, at the Croft Entertainment Complex. The Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival will be held on Monday, Sept. 5. COSI Columbus will host the final weekend of its exhibit “DINOSAURS: Explore. Escape. Survive,” which ends on Labor Day.

Keepers of the Art uses ‘Beats, Rhymes’ to feed ‘Life’ into the community
The plan to have an impactful weekend begins with the The Akron premier of actor Michael Rapaport’s “Beats, Rhymes & Life – the Travels of A Tribe Called Quest.” This is a film about the legendary hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest who topped the charts with positive and impactful lyrics during a time when hip-hop wasn’t all about money and its trappings. The screening will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at the Akron Civic Theater. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased via Ticketmaster.
Singer Nick Ashford dies of throat cancer
Famed singer and songwriter Nickolas Ashford, best known as one half of the duo Ashford & Simpson, died Monday after losing a battle with throat cancer. He was 70 years old. For the most part the duo had two careers -- one as astellar writing and producing partnership and the other as singers and performers themselves. Simpson may also be remembered as the shady Reverend Oates seen making deals with Nino Brown in "New Jack City."
