There are currently 89,000 veterans residing in Cuyahoga County and the unemployment rate for veterans in the area is 15%,CLEVELAND, Ohio – AMVETS Career Center (ACC), a nonprofit veterans’ service organization that provides free job search and career assistance services, opened a new office last week in the Cuyahoga County Veterans Service Commission (CCVSC) building. The office is the first and only ACC location in Cleveland and signifies an important expansion for AMVETS Career Center.
“With Cleveland being one of the three largest cities in Ohio, it was imperative that we set up a base there,” said ACC Director, Len Proper. “Cleveland has a large veteran population and now we’re in a better position to help vets in the area who are looking for work.”
There are currently 89,000 veterans residing in Cuyahoga County and the unemployment rate for veterans in the area is 15%, much higher than the 9.7% unemployment rate for the state of Ohio as a whole. Most of the veterans who seek assistance from the Cuyahoga County Veterans Service Commission are unemployed according to Executive Director, Bob Schloendorn.
“We don’t see ourselves as a job placement agency, but so many of our veterans come here for a referral and so it’s really nice to have someone here on-site to send them to. Sometimes veterans are required to complete skills training in order to continue receiving assistance from us and now we have someone in the building who can do that training right in his office.”
The AMVETS Career Center office is located at 1849 Prospect Ave on the first floor and is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00AM to 3:30PM. Ask for Veterans Outreach Specialist and retired marine, Brian McGown, or call him at (216) 698-2606.
