CLEVELAND - The protesting group known as Occupy Cleveland has a new permit for Public Square.

The protest, which is part of a nationwide movement against big business and corporate greed, had spent weeks living in small tents in downtown Cleveland. Eleven protestors were arrested Friday when the group’s “green space” permit expired and some people refused to leave.

Occupy Cleveland was granted a new permit on Monday, which gives them half of the space they had before, according to Occupy Cleveland organizers.

“#OccupyCleveland is will to compromise without reason, however the original permitted 120-foot sidewalk space quickly became inadequate for the movement, and was the impetus for the group’s attempt to move to a quadrant of Public Square,” the group said in a news release on Monday. “#OccupyCleveland will continue to engage in peaceful, civil disobedience demanding a permanent home as reclaimed democratic space where the movement can develop and grow.”

The new permit allows them to put up a 10-by-20-foot canopy and stay until Oct. 31. The group has been instructed that one side of the tent must be open so police can see that no one is sleeping, organizers said. While people are allowed to stay at Public Square overnight, sleeping is not permitted. Organizers said the tents are there for weather protection.

Occupy Cleveland was given a “sidewalk only” permit for Sunday and Monday after the group’s original permit expired.

Throughout this week, there will be several speakers, marches and assemblies.
