CLEVELAND - Cleveland police raided a suspected dog-fighting ring Thursday afternoon.

Cleveland Police Sgt. Sammy Morris said officers executed a county search warrant in the 700 block of East 91st Street around 2:10 p.m.

Officers said 16 puppies, mostly pit bulls, and seven or eight adult dogs were confiscated. Some of them had deep scars on their faces, while others were covered in bloody scratches. No arrests have been made, though authorities called the conditions horrifying.

"Filthy dirty, penned, blocked off pens where you could see they were fighting. Blood on the walls, like a fighting pit," said Kelly Barnett with the Northeast Ohio SPCA. "I don't know how many are in the backyard. The city guys are getting those because they're bigger."

According to police, it appeared as though the dogs were being conditioned to fight, using weighted collars and a treadmill with wood sides that forced the dogs to run. Even seasoned police officers were disgusted by what they saw.
