Cleveland has a new attraction that adds salt-water sharks to the city's waterfront mix.
The $33 million Greater Cleveland Aquarium was scheduled to open Saturday in a renovated streetcar powerhouse. It's located alongside the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) River and has a 150-foot tunnel offering a close-up view.
It's the only freestanding aquarium in Ohio and has a million gallons of water in 40 tanks. The exhibits include sharks and fish that inhabit coral reefs. Hermit crabs, Atlantic Stingrays and Bahama starfish are within reach in a touching pool.
The aquarium said it expects up to 500,000 visitors this year and will employ 50 full- and part-time workers.
Mayor Frank Jackson says the aquarium will strengthen the city as a tourist destination.
