GE Lighting invents with the vigor of its founder, Thomas Edison, to develop energy-efficient solutions that change the way people light their world in commercial, industrial, municipal and residential settings.
The holiday lights at GE Lighting's Nela Park headquarters have been a Northeast Ohio holiday staple for more than 80 years. This year, music and energy efficiency take center stage. The lighting displays "play" with music airing live on 107.1 FM. GE design consultants began working on the concept in March.
The display was illuminated at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 30, by GE Lighting President & CEO Maryrose Sylvester. She was assisted by 5-year-old Julian Wolke and 9-year-old Christian Wolke, children of Dan and Daria Wolke of Parma. Julian is in Pre-Kindergarten and Christian is in the 3rd Grade at Holy Family in Parma. They were among more than a hundred children and grandchildren of GE Lighting employees entered in a contest by their GE parent or grandparent for the honor of lighting the display.
Dan, an IT Professional Leader for GE Lighting, and Daria have been attending the lighting ceremony for years with their children. Dan entered his sons in the employee contest for the past few years, "hoping that one day they would be selected." The Wolkes surprised Julian and Christian, waiting until the day of the ceremony to let them know the big news.
The lighting of the holiday display is a long-held tradition that, for Dan, is an opportunity to catch-up with colleagues and their families, meet Santa Claus, partake in the rich history of Nela Park and, this year, to see his sons illuminate the 88th annual holiday lighting display. He sums it all by adding that it's "fun for the whole family."
The display will remain lit through New Year's Day. Visitors to the area can view the display from Noble Road along GE Lighting's global headquarters, Nela Park, at 1975 Noble Road in East Cleveland.
