Ex-Cleveland councilwoman pleads guilty to bribery

CLEVELAND - A former Cleveland city councilwoman pleaded guilty to charges related to the ongoing federal corruption investigation in Cuyahoga County.

 

Sabra Pierce Scott pleaded guilty on Wednesday to conspiracy to commit bribery concerning programs that receive federal funds, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

 

In a criminal information filed in the U.S. District Court in Cleveland last month, Scott was accued of accepting $2,000 from a developer. Prosecutors said that in November 2006, Scott sponsored legislation for approval of a tax increment financing district for the benefit of the development project.

The following March, prosecutors said Scott asked those connected with the project for cash.

 

Scott abruptly resigned from council in 2009, to the surprise of many political observers who believed she would continue to run.

Her sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 12.
