The verdict, read in open court on Wednesday afternoon, was to recommend separate death sentences for each of Sowell's deceased victims.

Sowell sat motionless as Davis testified that after the sexual assaults by Sowell began, her older brother and another uncle also began having sex with her on a daily basis.

The sentencing phase of the trial began Monday morning with testimony from Dr. Dale Watson, who suggested that Sowell may have suffered a brain injury following a 2007 heart attack.

"I know everybody said he's a good guy. He helped out everyone, he I guess ran an all-night cemetery too," Carr said. "'Hey, Tony, you think I can put this body in your basement.' Because he was a nice guy."
