The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.BEDFORD, Ohio—
One man is dead following a police-involved shooting in Bedford. It happened at a home on Cresswell Avenue Saturday afternoon at around 5:30 p.m.
A news release from the Bedford Police Department said officers initially responded to the home after Steven Mandich, 28, reported that his father had taken his medication.
Officers advised Mandich -- who appeared to be intoxicated -- to get his medicine from his parents when they returned home. The officers then left the scene.
A short time later, Mandich called police again and threatened to kill himself. Mandich's parents came home as officers arrived at the residence for the second time. Police said by that time Mandich was in an upstairs bedroom, armed with a knife.
According to the release, officers tried talking Mandich into giving up his knife before using a taser to try and subdue him. When the taser attempts failed, an officer tried bringing a "less lethal" weapon into the home, and was physically confronted by Mandich's father, Richard. Officers deployed a taser on Richard Mandich, who was then taken into custody.
Officials said Steven Mandich, distraught over his father's arrest, charged police with the knife. An officer then fired at him to stop the attack. Mandich was taken to University Hospitals Bedford Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave as the shooting is investigated.
Richard Mandich has been charged with obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
