WASHINGTON - He's briefed his national security team on the decision he's made -- and now, President Barack Obama is getting ready to tell the American people tomorrow night about his plans for a troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

A senior defense official says about 5,000 troops are expected to leave this summer, and another 5,000 by the end of the year. Obama has been saying he favors a "significant" withdrawal.

Spokesman Jay Carney says Obama informed his national security team of his plans this morning.

The president could also announce tomorrow a timetable for recalling 20,000 other troops he ordered to Afghanistan as part of his decision in December of 2009 to send reinforcements in hopes of reversing the Taliban's momentum.

Carney isn't discussing the details of Obama's decision. But he says the drawdown that is set to begin next month puts the U.S. on a path toward giving Afghans control of their own security by 2014.
