MEXICO – Malcolm Shabazz, 28, the grandson of controversial civil rights leader, Malcolm X, was found dead in Mexico City. Shabazz was in Mexico to meet with Miguel Suarez, a member of a California-based labor organization, Rumec. Earlier reports said he was shot in Tijuana, but it has been confirmed that he was beaten to death. Juan Ruiz, another member of Rumec, said he believes his murderers were trying to rob him and he didn’t allow it, so they beat him to death and he died on his way to the hospital.

United States

NEW YORK – The parents of an elementary school boy in Troy, New York are alleging that their son’s teacher forced him to lick his desk after he drew on it. The incident happened after the teacher caught their son doodling on his desk. As punishment, she ordered the student to clean up the marks with his tongue. According to reports, the student was forced to keep licking the desk until he began to gag, at which point the teacher had him use paper towels to wipe it off. The student has been placed in another class, but his previous teacher told his friends not to speak with him. The boy’s teacher has not been disciplined nor has she given an apology.

MICHIGAN – A Detroit pimp took his own life as a team of law enforcement officers closed in on arresting him. Officers of a multi-regional law enforcement team repeatedly knocked on Mark Luke White’s door, demanding that he give himself up. Officers soon raided the apartment and secured it. Roughly 20 seconds later officers heard A single gunshot and then found White dead in a bedroom. Authorities were seeking human trafficking charges against White.

RWANDA – Rwanda’s education minister has vowed to tackle sex abuse in schools after a report revealed that 43 percent of surveyed students were aware of other school children being raped. Teachers were reported to be among the worst offenders. The government report surveyed 2,052 students across the country. It said that 1,600 girls in Rwanda had left school because of abuse last year, 500 because they were pregnant. The report said that older men, known locally as “sugar daddies,” were mostly to blame for the high number of pregnancies reported. Along with teachers, taxi drivers were among the top reported offenders.

NIGERIA – Seventeen teenage girls and 11 babies have been rescued from a house in Nigeria’s south-eastern Imo state, according to police. They say they are looking for a woman suspected of planning to sell the babies. The girls claim they were fed once a day and were not allowed to leave the home. It is not uncommon for such “baby factories” to be found in south-eastern Nigeria. The girls say they had all gotten pregnant by a 23-year-old man, who has been arrested.

Caribbean

BAHAMAS – A suspect, who died from asphyxia in police custody, was placed in a choke hold that was not taught by the police academy. Corporal Brian Roach told the court that he used a restraint tactic he learned while training as a martial artist. The suspect, Jamie Smith, 35, gave police a false name when he was arrested for armed robbery. He died the same day. When police tried to fingerprint Smith, he tried to escape. Several police attempted to apprehend Smith before Roach finally restrained him with a “sleeper hold.”

Roach admitted that when using a sleeper hold you should be able to resuscitate the person. But Roach said that he does not know CPR.
