ILLINOIS – Just days after performing with her high school band at the parade for President Obama’s second inaugural celebration in Washington, 15 year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot in killed in her hometown, Chicago. Pendleton was taking shelter from the rain with a group of 10 to 12 teenagers when someone ran up to them and opened fire. None of the teenagers were known to be in a gang, but it is believed the shooter mistook someone in the crowd for a rival gang member. Ironically, Pendleton had appeared in a public service announcement about gang violence in late 2008 (watch the video at www.callandpost.com).
NEW YORK– Tamika D. Mallory, the youngest executive director of Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network, has been honored by Jet Magazine. In Jet Magazine’s February 11th issue, Mallory, who is known for her work against gun violence and misogynistic song lyrics, is being named the “Sojourner Truth of Our Time.”
FLORIDA – Rep. Alcee L. Hastings said that President Obama consistently disrespects the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Black Press, and graduates of historically Black colleges – key groups that were critical to his reelection in November.Hastingssaid the CBC carefully vetted candidates they felt would be ideal for the second Obama administration, which has come under fire for being dominated by White males. He added that a top campaign official said Obama initially planned to spend only $650,000 with Black newspapers, a figure that was raised under pressure to $1million, leaving an estimated advertising budget of $999 million remaining to be spent with non-Black newspapers.

MOZAMBIQUE– Sixty-four year-old Margarida Matsinhe has won the 2013 Gates Vaccine Innovation Award for her instrumental work in overhauling the vaccine system inMozambique. Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, made the announcement last week in his annual letter. The award recognizes revolutionary ways for immunizing the world’s poorest children. Nominees are assessed on innovation and creativity, impact and scale.
SOUTH AFRICA – South Africa’s first Black billionaire, Patrice Motsepe, last week said he has signed up for the “Giving Pledge,” becoming the first African to join some of the worlds wealthiest people in donating vast sums of personal wealth to the poor. Mining giant, Motsepe, with assets estimated at $2.65 billion, said he is making the pledge to benefit the millions of South Africans who have seen little gain in their personal fortunes since White minority rule ended in 1994.

BERMUDA– Police have launched an investigation after two men were shot and killed in a store. This was the first double murder to hit the island since gun violence began an upsurge in 2009. They are also the first murders of the year. The police have not released the names of the victims, only saying that they were “young.” Five men were shot and killed last year including one on Christmas Day.
