Bishop Speaks Week of 12-21-2011

The gift of giving

Toys for grannies … HELP! HELP! HELP!

I'm speechless and a little confused, but I'm keeping the faith that somebody, anybody, everybody, even the precious one that feels like a nobody, will stop by the In Touch for Christ Christian Center, 969 E. 140th St. (Off St. Clair Ave directly across the street from the Job Corps Campus in the heart of the Collinwood Community) this Thursday, Dec.  22, between the hours of 7pm-8pm and drop off toys for grannies.

In last week’s Bishop Speaks column, I asked each of you, my faithful readers, to assist this In Touch Ministry Team with toys for beautiful, precious grandmothers taking care of their grandchildren. These grandmothers on a fixed income with no assistance from the "system," instead of sitting down and enjoying their last years on earth, have taken on the responsibility of looking out for their children's children.

One grandmother at seventy one years old has two grandchildren, which seems to have given her more life for living even longer. These grandmothers, don't have transportation, can't get out like they want and often have to have someone go shopping for them to the grocery store, yet they are handling their business taking care of these precious grandchildren.

Last Saturday, as the children were in rehearsal for their Christmas play, the staff, and parents waited to receive toys with wrapping paper, tape and hot chocolate ready for our visitors. Last Saturday, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., only two individuals showed up with toys! This wonderful mother, along with her daughter, has been following me for years and I enjoyed meeting them, taking pictures with them and thanking God for the beautiful toys they brought. But more toys are needed for these precious grandchildren. I also thank another individual who mailed out Five Dollars with a note saying, "For grannies, buy a toy."

Ok, I'll walk by Faith and look forward to seeing each my readers this Thursday once again between the hours of 7pm and 8pm.

Remember, "Jesus is the Reason for this Season."

Merry Christmas to each of you!
