A special appreciation service was held for Bishop Steven Gulley at the Glorious Church of God located at 3525 East 93rd Street where Vivian Lockett is pastor. Gulley has been around for a long time and well deserving of the honor.

Many came out in support of Gulley and wished him all the best.

It was good to see him get on the piano and bring back the good old days, playing for the Colston Sisters. The Colstons use to sing a lot at Your Alternative onKinsman Ave.The group features Lucretia Colston (Bolden) and Vivian Colston (Lockett).

Other participants included Imani Temple Ministries choir,ShilohTemplechoir, and Glorious Church of God. Gulley, who has been sick for a little while, was thankful for the service.

Gulley comes from a musical family and remembers the days when he started playing the saxophone while atJohnAdamsHigh Schoolin the 70s.

“I remember the days of playing atTempleBaptistChurchand Bethesda Church of Cleveland,” said Gulley.

The only instrument he’s seen playing these days is the organ and piano. Gulley’s sister, Barbara Gulley Collier, started The Cleveland Interfaith Choir (CIC) back in 1982 and was well known for her musical talent.

Old school gospel music is very much what Gulley is about and he has touched many with his ministry. Through his ministry, along with Pastor Leon Lawrence and Eddie Fields, Greater Faith Baptist Church Creations Choir did a live recording.

Whatever your criteria of what makes a good church musician, Gulley has to be among the people aroundOhiowho are called upon to play. Even through his illness, Gulley still finds time to be in church at the organ, giving thanks for how much he is blessed.

“I have never taken anything for granted and I appreciate that someone would think enough of me to give me a day of service,” Gulley said.

Gulley’s inner drive keeps him going, he shared.

Over the years, Gulley has grown spiritually. He better understands what type of music sets the tone of the worship service. Worship services have always had some type of music even if it has been acappella.  Gulley knows when and where to add this type of music.
