The Browns lost 24-14 to the Chicago Bears in Thursday's preseason finale at Soldier Field.

CHICAGO -- The Browns fell to the Chicago Bears 24-14 in Thursday night’s preseason finale at Soldier Field.

The Bears extended their lead to its final margin when Robert Hughes scored on a one-yard touchdown run between the tackles with 5:56 remaining in the game.

Hughes cleared a tackle at the line of scrimmage before falling into the end zone. It was his second scoring run of the game and he caught a pass to set up a goal-to-go situation earlier in the drive.

Reserve linebacker Deron Minor set up the scoring drive with an interception of Browns quarterback Jarrett Brown.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, the Browns cut into the Bears’ lead when Brown threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Rod Windsor with 11:43 remaining in the game.

Brown’s pass capped a six-play, 76-yard drive that featured an illegal blow to the helmet penalty. On a deep pass down the left side of the field, Bears safety Winston Venable hit Browns wide receiver Demetrius Williams in the head with the crown of his helmet.

Running back Armond Smith got the Browns on the scoreboard with a six-yard touchdown run between the tackles against the Bears. Smith’s run cut the Bears’ lead to 17-7 with 1:29 remaining in the first half.

The Browns marched 74 yards on nine plays and took 3:39 off the clock. Wide receiver Brian Robiskie caught three passes for 39 yards, including a 21-yarder good for the Browns’ first first down of the game.

Bears running back Robert Hughes’ two-yard touchdown run with 5:08 remaining in the first half had given the Bears a 17-0 lead over the Browns on a scoring drive aided by three defensive penalties.

Cornerback James Dockery was whistled for illegal contact and also pass interference, while defensive lineman Brian Schaefering picked up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Quarterback Caleb Hanie’s 19-yard touchdown pass to Johnny Knox in the left corner of Soldier Field’s North end zone extended the Bears’ lead to 10-0 over the Browns with 1:47 remaining in the first quarter.

Knox was being covered by cornerback Buster Skrine with safety DeAngelo Smith coming over top with help.

The eight-play, 67-yard drive covered 3:54 and was added by back-to-back penalties on Jabaal Sheard.

Sheard was flagged for a hit to Hanie’s helmet and jumping offsides.

Kicker Robbie Gould gave the Bears a 3-0 with a 22-yard field goal at the 7:24 mark of the first quarter.

Gould’s kick capped off a 16-play, 76-yard drive that took 7:36 off the first quarter clock. The Browns had one defensive penalty on the drive, a pass interference call against rookie defensive back James Dockery.

Dockery was called for contact with Bears wide receiver and Ohio native Dane Sanzenbacher.

The Bears won the opening coin toss and took the ball to start tonight’s preseason finale against the Browns. The Browns defended the North end zone.
