Browns coach Pat Shurmur is focused on setting the right tempo for his players and the organization as a whole.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur holds a Master’s degree in finance from Michigan State University, but just because he chose a film room over an office does not mean his business principles were left behind.
Shurmur believes it is the responsibility of his staff to “set a direction” for the team.
“We set a way to do business. We set a standard of excellence and then, we know we’re trying to achieve them,” Shurmur said after practice Monday. “Instead of dealing with players, I’ve always looked at it as we’re working together to get there. I do believe in the word ‘professionalism’ and I think, as professionals, they know.”
In order to set the direction of the team, the coaches and players need to have a solid line of communication. There must also be an appreciation for everyone’s responsibilities and abilities.
“We need to be upfront with one another,” said Shurmur. “If I don’t like a performance, I will say it. If I do like one, I’ll say it. I expect the players to be man enough to accept when they make mistakes and we can look at ways to correct it. Then, you’ll continue to improve. That being said, the players are giving great effort in trying to do what we ask them to do.
“I have a great deal of respect for what they try to do, the players,” he continued. “I have a great deal of respect for how hard it is for my coaches to do their jobs and I understand that from time to time, there is going to be a mistake or there is going to be an error. As long as guys are giving great effort and they’re fighting to know what they’re supposed to do, then, we’ll get to a point where we won’t repeat those errors and move forward.”
Shurmur’s approach to handling the team and each individual player was noticed immediately by those on the field. It was also clear that Shurmur had an understanding of the need to take care of his players.
