Most of the top-seeds from the districts, advanced to the regionals on Saturday in the girls basketball.

At Bedford, top-seed Solon put away Shaker Heights 57-39 to win the Division I Bedford District Title. The Comets had three players in double-figures. Senior Kristen Confroy led the Comets (22-3) 13 points. Junior Martha Thompson had 12 points and senior Kristen Low had 10.  The Comets limited the Lady Red Raiders (15-8) to one field-goal in the first quarter and led 13-7. The Comets led at the half 27-13. Senior and Wagner University recruit Jordyn Peck finished with 12 points.

The Comets will take on Northeast Ohio Conference foe Mentor (11-13) at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.

At Perry, junior Lauren Stefancin sank eight three-point field-goals and helped the Mentor Cardinals to a 61-49 victory over the Glenville Tarblooders. Stefancin finished with the game-high of 28 points. The Cardinals were the fifth seed. For the Tarblooders, who took out top-seed Eastlake North, freshman Latrice Legion had 27 points. The Tarblooders, the Senate Athletic League Champs, ended their season with an 18-4 record.

At Parma, top-seed Midpark jumped out early and cruised to a 74-56 victory over the Bees of Medina. The Meteors led 21-8 after the first quarter. Midpark (21-2) had four players in double-figures. Senior Rachel Theriot led the quartet with 19 points. Junior Korie Maryo had 17 points.  Midpark will take on the defending D-I champion the Twinsburg Lady Tigers.

At Akron District, top-seed and the top team in Kizer/Call and Post’s Top 20 Twinsburg rout Warren Howland 66-45. Maryland recruit senior Malina Howard had a career-high of 39 points.

At Elyria District, top-seed Magnificat 16-7 fourth quarter helped them to a 64-53 triumph over Westlake. The Blue Streaks got 22 points from senior Stephanie Haas. Senior Pam Wise chipped in 19 points. The Blue Streaks (19-4) advanced to the Norwalk Regional they will take on Wadsworth.

At Medina District, top-seed Wadsworth (21-3) outscored fifth-seed Brunswick 30-6 in the second and third quarter and coasted to a 54-32 victory. Senior Kara Long led the Grizzlies with 18 points. Junior Rachel Goddard added 10 points.

The Region I Canton bracket is filled with three NOC teams. Games were played on Tuesday.  The finals will be on Friday.

In Division II, at Macedonia District, three-time defending champs Hathaway Brown pounded St. Vincent – St. Mary 61-39. Vanessa Smith led with 26 points and Stephanie Poland had 20 points. The Blazers took on Canfield (17-7) Tuesday.

At Uniontown, Manchester kept their undefeated season in tack by edging Akron Hoban 56-52. Top-seed Panthers (24-0) opened up with a 21-8 first quarter lead. But the Knights (19-4) who only had three players in the scoring column made it interesting.

In the boys:

They are down to the final 32 in Division I.

At Solon, on Saturday afternoon, top-seed Cleveland Heights Tigers, who are playing without senior guard Tyree Gaiter, edged Bedford 56-53.  The Tigers saw their 25-14 halftime lead vanish. Thanks to the point production by J.J. Woodson the Bearcats (9-13) took the lead at the end of three at 36-34. Woodson had the game-high of 18 points. The Tigers (17-4) got 11 points from senior Najeeb Johnson and junior Dairyon Davis. The Tigers will take on third-seed Garfield Heights on Thursday.

Garfield Heights did not have any trouble by putting away Maple Heights 61-37. Junior forward Tony Farmer had 12 points. He shares the team-high with senior guard Terrill Byrd.

On Friday, Shaker Heights edged John F. Kennedy 53-51. For head coach Danny Young he probably gave the game-ball to senior Jeland Head. Head, senior guard, had his best game in a Shaker uniform.  He led the Red Raiders (19-2) with 17 points. Head has only played in six games.  He transferred from Euclid last year. The Red Raiders will take on St. Ignatius.

St. Ignatius outlasted Kenston 41-37. In a game, which you would say the first team to 40 will win, the game was tied at 4 at the end of the first quarter. It was tied at 19 at half. Junior Francisco Santiago and junior Derek Sloan had 12 points each. For the Bombers (20-2), 6-foot-10 senior center Eric Truog ended his high school career with a team-high of 10 points.

St. Ignatius will take on Shaker Heights, today at 7 p.m. The winner will take on Cleveland Heights/Garfield Heights, on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

At Euclid, Mentor continues to score 100 points or better. The Cardinals, top-seed, defeated Riverside 110-45 on Feb. 28, then the beat Shaw Cardinals 102-88 on Friday. The Cardinals (20-2) will take on East Tech, on Thursday.
