Straight Talk from the Dawg Pound

Defense at the Center of the Browns Loss to San Diego, 30-27

One of the most obvious characteristics of a second-year Mike Pettine coached team is adjustments. Last season, whenever the Browns performed poorly, Pettine would make adjustments that would net a quality showing by the Browns.

Gut-Check Time. At 1-3, it is easy to get down on yourself, your teammates, and your coaches. However, the Browns’ players have to take a personal look at themselves. In the last two weeks, opponents were able to march down the field way too easily. Each player has to ask himself “Am I doing everything possible to help my team? Am I executing to the best of my ability? Am I winning the battle in the trenches?” If not, why not. Coaches—Are we disguising our defense enough so that the QB can’t recognize the blitz/coverages?

Next Man Up Mentality. Despite the injury bug, the Browns have to have a next man up mindset. If it means staying extra time in the film room, if it means taking more reps in practice, one has to be ready to step in to create the seamless attack. This is the NFL.

The Next Team Up—Baltimore. The Browns head to Ravens country this Sunday. Both teams come into the game at 1 and 3. In the last five meetings, the Ravens have won them all; in the all-time series, the Ravens lead 24-8. Logically, one would have to give the edge to the Ravens. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is 13-1 in his career against the Browns, throwing 18 touchdowns vs. 7 interceptions. Flacco’s primary target, Steve Smith, Sr., is out with a back injury. So, if the Browns are going to step up, this is a great opportunity.

The Browns need to put all negative thoughts out of their respective minds and get on the winning track.
