By golly, the Browns got it right

All of the stars aligned for the Cleveland Browns and their brain trust at the NFL Draft last week held in Philadelphia as the home town team capped the best overall prospect Myles Garrett and then addressed their most pressing need on defense.

While many had hoped the Browns grab hometown favorite, the marvel from Mentor Mitch Tribusky, they got a reprieve when the Bears traded up to the second spot to take the North Carolina signal caller.

That gave the Browns front office a sigh of relief from their rabid fan base that would have preferred Tribusky at all cost, even if it meant taking him at No. 1, but to their credit the Browns held firm on Garrett.

As the Clemson quarterback DeShaun Watson sat on the board at 12, many thought he would be the Browns quarterback selection, but instead the team traded out of the 12th spot with Houston and snatched up the athletically freakish Jabrill Peppers of Michigan.

In the deal the Browns added a first-rounder in 2018 from Houston, for the 2016 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year with 72 tackles and 16 for a loss with the 25th pick in the first round.

They were not done, the Browns traded back into the first round to 29 and selected another super athletic albeit raw tight end from Miami in David Njoku.

He caught 43 passes for 698 yards and eight touchdowns.

The potential quarterback of the future came in round 2 with the 52nd pick when they picked Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer, a player many thought had first round talent.

Kizer, a Toledo Central Catholic alum was the fourth QB drafted. In round 3 they went with another defensive player in Larry Ogunjobi, defensive tackle from Charlotte who had 65 tackles of which 13.5 were for a loss.

They added another player to their hazardous defense with Houston’s Howard Wilson with the 126 pick in the fourth round.

Wilson missed most of his 2015 season due to injury, but made up for it with five interceptions in 2016.

Most of the Browns drafts picks were being introduced to the city at the Indians game and the Cavs playoff game where Kizer got a better ovation than Tribusky did at the Bulls game.

So, finally some good news for Cleveland Browns football fans who were on the edge of jumping out of the pound in droves. They are back in now and will optimistically look forward to another season of football.

Party at Lancers

Glenville legendary football coach Ted Ginn Sr. and friends and family of Marshon Lattimore gathered at Lancers to watch the NFL draft and while rooting for the Browns they were especially cheered for Lattimore who was selected by New Orleans Saints with the No. 11 pick. The Ohio State Buckeye also starred for Glenville High School for Ginn Sr.
