Indians call-up Greg Allen

The Cleveland Indians added a third African American player to their roster with the recent call-up of 25-year old California product Greg Allen.

Allen, a 6th round draft choice of the Tribe in 2014, made his 2018 Major League debut on May 6 at New York against the Yankees and went 0-4.

Allen appeared in two games for Cleveland last month. He was batting .260 with eight doubles, three RBIs and six stolen bases at Columbus.

The 6-foot-, 175 speedster joins veterans Rajai Davis and Michael Brantley in the Indians outfield, but only called up because of an injury to center fielder Bradley Zimmer who was injured after crashing hard into the fence trying to catch Yankee catcher Austin Romine's double. He suffered bruised left shoulder and hip and his time table is day to day.

Allen attended Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, California and attended San Diego State University where he played in college baseball for three seasons for the Aztecs.

In 2015, he played for the Lake County Captains of the Class A Midwest League and in 2016 for the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Class A-Advanced Carolina League, before the Indians promoted Allen to the Akron Rubber Ducks of the Class AA Eastern League.

Allen finished 2016 with a .295 batting average with 7 home runs and 44 RBI's. After the season, the Indians assigned Allen to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League.

Allen began the 2017 season with Akron. The Indians promoted him to the major leagues on September 1, 2017 and September 7, Allen hit his first MLB home run.
