Prep football week 7 preview

It is hard to believe that week 7 of the high school football season is upon us. However, there are a lot of unbeaten teams at 6-0 that will clash this week. Conference titles races are in full effect in the Greater Cleveland Conference as three teams tries upset top-ranked Mentor Cardinals.

Some surprised teams are at 6-0 like, Maple Heights, Garfield Heights and NDCL. What is more surprising that St. Edward and St. Ignatius is not on the list. In Ohio a total of 58 teams have not tasted defeat yet. Will one of those teams had a hearty dose of defeat this week? We will see.

This week’s key games:

No. 4 Euclid (5-1) at No. 3 Solon (6-0) – The loser of this game will be eliminated for the Greater Cleveland Conference title. The Euclid Panthers and Solon Comets are both 3-0 in the GCC. Both teams are hot, however one will be cooled off after.

No. 12 Shaker Heights (5-1) at No. 1 Mentor (6-0) – Both teams are unbeaten in the GCC. Mentor has won 11 straight times against Shaker Heights. The Red Raiders’ last victory over the Mentor Cardinals was on October 15, 2004. The winner has an inside track of winning the GCC. The Cardinals No. 2 in the OHSSA Division, Region 1 State Playoff poll. Shaker Heights is 9. The top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs.

Painesville Riverside (5-1) at No. 9 Kenston (6-0) – The winner will win the Western Reserve Conference title. The Kenston Bombers is having a marvelous season with quarterback Jon Tomcufcik and wide receiver Bransen Stanley. The Beavers had made the WRC race interesting. They have won five in a row and they are 3-0 in the WRC.

No. 7 Avon Lake (6-0) at Amherst Steele (5-1) – The Amherst Steele losing to Olmsted Falls 27-2 put a big damper on their battle against unbeaten Avon Lake Shoremen and the Southwestern Conference title. The Shoremen have won 15 straight games against the Comets.

Olmsted Falls (5-1) at Berea-Midpark (4-2) – The Olmsted Falls big victory over Amherst Steele gave them good computer points as now they No. 9 in the D-II, Region 8 state playoff rankings. A Bulldog victory could get them higher. Amherst Steele has the No. 6 spot and they will be battling Avon Lake a team that they have not beaten in 15 years. For Berea-Midpark, they need to win out their season and get help in the stacked D-I, R-I. They are 13th and could climb. The Titans are 4-1 in the Southwestern Conference. They have Avon Lake and Avon in the future. The Bulldogs already lost to Avon. They also have Avon Lake coming up.
