Delta’s recognize Sisterhood Month

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS- Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter (GCAC) recognized Sisterhood Month with a weekend of activities celebrating its 104 year history of social action and service. Founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women on the campus of Howard University, the sorority marked its first social action with their controversial participation in the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington DC on March 3, 1913. Braving opposition and oppression in the form of discrimination and sexism, these young women set the standard for Delta’s ongoing commitment to visible and meaningful social activism.
On Saturday, March 11, more than 450 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. assembled at the Cleveland Marriott East in Warrensville Heights for a Founders Day Recognition Luncheon which featured remarks by 21st National President and 11th Congressional District Congresswoman, Hon. Marcia L. Fudge, and a keynote address from National 1st Vice President Beverly E. Smith, an alumni of the Epsilon Omicron chapter of Bowling Green State University.
Attendees were also presented a reenactment of the sorority's founding, and the re-creation of the Women’s Suffrage March, as well as the Founders historic group photograph. In addition, GCAC members with 25 and 50 years of service in the sorority were recognized with a presentation of honors.
The weekend concluded with Sisterhood Sunday on March 12, 2017 at the Imani Temple Ministries in Cleveland Heights with more than 70 Deltas in attendance adorned in red attire.
The Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter (GCAC), currently led by Dr. Nicole Y. Richardson, Chapter President, was formerly known as Omega Chapter. GCAC has more than 450 members, and has served the Greater Cleveland community since 1924 by providing scholarships for higher education, hosting community events, and upholding the principles of its Founders with active involvement in social programming and legislation.
