School Massacre Reignites Gun Debate

These students mourn the loss of their friends who were among the murdered at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Fl.

The unspeakable school shooting that claimed the lives of 17 innocent people, 14 of them students, a coach, an athletic director and a geography teacher last week at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland FL has reignited the riveting debate about gun control.

As families continue to hold funerals and politicians carefully crafted messages of condolence to those affected by the tragedy, students from the school have decided to take their fight directly to the adult legislators in their appeal for immediate change.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut claimed 20 children between six and seven years old, as well as six adult staff members.

The uproar after the deadliest mass shooting at either a high school or grade school, but the event did little to alter gun control laws.

Among the many proposals included making the background-check system universal, and for new federal and state gun legislation banning the sale and manufacture of certain types of semi-automatic firearms and magazines with more than ten rounds of ammunition.

Seven years later, the debate has reemerged with renewed vigor and initiated by a group of grieving students who lost their friends, educators and mentors, and this time it feels different.

On Monday three busloads of students took the seven hour drive from Parkland to the Florida state capitol in Tallahassee to personally deliver their message, and they have declared that this will not happen again.

Hollywood actor George Clooney has committee a half million dollars to the new movement ‘March For Our Lives’ that announced they will march in the nation's capital and other cities on March 24 to demand safer schools and legislation "to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant" across the nation.

Some gun owners have already heard their message and have gone to lengths to destroy their weapons, video taping it and post it to social media.

Their voices are precise and clear, their message is determined and guided and when this new movement unfolds in earnest next month, America could be changed for the better.
